Overview

OSG was commissioned by Selsdon Building Contractors to undertake the technical architectural design work for an exciting new residential development in Purley. The project, designed by Altham Lewis Architects, aims to create a fully affordable housing complex, providing 40 modern residential flats, including 36 family units and 4 wheelchair-accessible units. This project has seen us embracing the challenge of the tight site, significant level differences, and strict regulations to deliver an exceptional architectural design that complements the surroundings while maximising space and functionality.

Challenges Overcome

The tight site and significant level differences posed challenges for us. To overcome these constraints, the team developed innovative solutions, including stepped sections to the building and extensive retaining elements, addressing the topographical constraints and enhancing the architectural appeal of the development.

The design required careful consideration of fire and ventilation regulations for the half-sunken undercroft parking and a smoke ventilation strategy for each block. Our design incorporates all of the necessary safety measures, ensuring compliance with rigorous standards without compromising the design integrity.

Project Timeline

The project commenced in February 2022 and is scheduled for completion in June 2024.

Summary

A project where we were required to employ high-level problem-solving skills at the technical design stage to resolve the integration of functionality, safety, and aesthetics on a challenging site. We are proud to contribute to the creation of this sustainable and welcoming community, providing much-needed affordable housing for the area.
